What Truly Determines a Model's Capabilities?
The value of data lies not only in its volume, but in the ability to trace its source, licensing, the transformations it has undergone, and the proportion of synthetic content within it. When models are repeatedly trained on machine-generated data, rare cases and diversity may gradually disappear, resulting in a narrower representation of reality rather than a deeper understanding of it.
The real bottleneck is not always computing power, but the speed at which data can be moved to the processor. During training and inference, model weights, activations, and the temporary KV cache compete for high-bandwidth GPU memory. As a result, available compute capacity may remain underutilized simply because the data cannot be delivered fast enough.
A high benchmark score does not always indicate greater capability. If evaluation questions appear in the training data, the test may measure the model’s ability to memorize rather than generalize. Modern evaluations therefore rely on dynamic benchmarks, contamination-resistant testing, and robustness measurements under changing contexts and data conditions.
